Services provided by National Cinnamon Research and Training Centre

1. Laboratory Analysis Services
  • Test soil samples and provide reports through accredited laboratories.
  • Conduct component analysis required for the export of cinnamon oil and standard parameters of cinnamon and related products.
2. Field Testing Services
  • Inspect cinnamon lands and provide instructions to improve cultivation or solve existing problems.
  • Offer disease and pest detection and management advice. 
3. Consultancy Services
  • Advising on land selection, crop installation, tillage management, crop processing, post-harvest technology and preparation of value-added products from the nursery level.
4. Training Services
  • Implement necessary training courses for every step of the cinnamon industry.
  • Conduct village-level training courses through a mobile training unit. 
5. Research support and other services
  • Provide industrial in-service training to university and higher educational institution students.
  • Supply planting material for new cinnamon varieties and research purposes.
  • Offer a cinnamon oil extraction unit to external parties on a payment basis.
  • Provide opportunities for external parties to use a cinnamon cutting machine and cinnamon shredder.

Services provided by The Department of Cinnamon Development 

1. Registration and Guidance of Plant Nurseries
  • Register cinnamon plant nurseries.
  • Certify suitable plants to be issued.
  • Provide technical advice to nursery artisans for producing high-quality cinnamon plants.
2. Farmer Training and Field Day Programs
  • Conduct training sessions and field days on good agricultural practices, productivity improvement and sustainable farming practices. 
3. GAP Implementation and Certification Guidance
  • Support in obtaining Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)  certification.
4. Guidance on GI Compliance
  • Assist in achieving Geographic Indicator Certification (GI) compatibility across all segments of the value chain.
5. In-Situ soil pH testing
  • Conduct soil pH tests to ensure optimal cinnamon yield.
6. Implementation of development programmes
  • Plan and implement development programs to meet the specific needs of the cinnamon industry.
7. Field inspection and consultancy services
  • Conduct regular field inspections to monitor progress and provide necessary advice to farmers.
8. Technical support for factories
  • Provide technical knowledge for setting up cinnamon processing factories and guide the purchase of appropriate machinery.
9. Value Addition and Export Oriented Training Programmes
  • Implement specialized training programs focusing on value addition techniques and export market readiness.
10. Certification Support
  • Provide the technical know-how required to obtain GMP, HACCP and ISO quality certificates.

The head office of the Department of Cinnamon Development was established in Karandeniya, Galle district. Among the department’s first major projects is the Cinnamon Gate project in Pinnaduwa, Galle.
